The People of New Delhi
|
The people of New Delhi are commonly referred to as ‘Dilliwalas’ or ‘Delhiites’. The city has experienced massive growth in its population due to the migration of people from other parts of India. The people of Delhi are down to earth and welcoming people. They are open to new cultures and proud of their traditions ("Delhi People”). The most popular holiday in Delhi is the Diwali Festival of Lights. This is the celebration of the New Year in India. During this time the entire population covers their town with colorful, exotic lanterns. This fun tradition lasts five days. Those days are filled with eating, chatting with friends and lighting fireworks to welcome in the new year ("Festivities, Holidays and Traditions in New Delhi"). The main dishes in Delhi consists of Chole Bhature, Parathas, Butter Chicken, and Biryani. These dishes are found at any local street food outlet or a small restaurant in Delhi (Munjal). Because of Delhi’s large population, the traffic circulation seems to be overburdened. Traffic is usually backed up due to slow-moving automobiles as well as the quantity of automobiles on the road. In current news, due to the high levels of polluted air in New Delhi, Delhiites are encouraged to stay inside their homes at all times. They only roam around the city if they are wearing protection.

What Makes New Delhi Beautiful |
Challenges for Delhi |
New Delhi is on its way to becoming one of the world's most modern design centers. On any given day, you can find a piece of artwork displayed on the streets. Every year layout districts from around New Delhi come together to exhibit goods related to design, decor, and agriculture. Many residents are supportive of the artwork made by young artists, and show up to admire the products as well as purchase them. At the National Crafts Museum, thousands of crafting objects are made and this "continues to be fundamental activity across India” (Kloss). The appealing artwork displayed throughout New Delhi is what makes the city unique and beautiful.
A major problem in Delhi is housing. The growth in population has led to a rise in demand for homes. The city faces a huge housing storage. There are some reasons for this. “One is the non-availability of good quality land within the city’s municipal limits and the second reason is the reluctance of private sector real estate developers to build affordable homes” according to Argawal. Another hassle occurring in Delhi is transportation. In the last 15 years, the number of vehicles has almost doubled and remains a major element contributing to New Delhi’s low air quality. Waste disposal is another problem occurring in Delhi. Half-a-kilogram of waste is created in Delhi with “30 percent of waste disposed through the streets or illegal dumping places”. This creates environmental and health issues as well as rotting smells even from one kilometer away! An additional problem is carbon footprints. Currently “Delhi has a carbon footprint of 0.70 metric tons per person” . Delhi's carbon footprint is slightly lower than in other cities but it remains a critical issue. New Delhi also seems to be having water issues. The water Delhi residents are drinking is contaminated with cement, paint, varnishes and other construction material. It is so contaminated and it has no exposure to "air, sunlight or clean micro-organisms" ("New Delhi, India").
